Mel Gibson Furor

Everyone is seriously overreacting to Mel Gibson's words and actions this weekend. Here is what I wrote in the comments over at Althouse:

Given what the American public has accepted and forgiven in the past, I think people are seriously overreacting. Was anything Mel reportedly said, before he contritely apologised, any worse than what Jesse Jackson has said? (Hymietown or otherwise? and Jackson still has never truly apologised for those remarks). I bet you, if this had been Michael Moore, Rob Reiner, Alec Baldwin or some other liberal darling, this would have already blown over. Mel is being punished because he is not a typical Hollywood lefty.Hell, look at what Woody Allen has said and done, and his movies are still being released. If Roman Polanski ever dared to come back, the left would sprint to embrace him.Get a grip people.

So these other guys said some like

"F*****g Jews... The Jews are responsible for all the wars in the world." Gibson then asked the deputy, "Are you a Jew?"

Are you sure? When did Jackson say that the Jews are responsible for all wars? Baldwin said "F*****g Jews...are you a Jew?"

And don't give me "He was drunk" crap.

Ed,

You, (and a lot of other people) are setting an awfully tough standard to live by. Gibson made one mistake, and he abjectly and contritely apologised for it. Yet you still want to hang him.

Perfection is a pretty high standard, one I can't manage. I wish you guys would let the rest of us know how you do it.

Jackson refering to jews as Hymies is a pretty good tell. He has been a politician for a long time... preaching his hate. He thought he was safe amongst his fellow black men, even if they were reporters.

Jackson also admits to spitting in the soup of white people while he was a waiter.... a real class act. I wonder, if he isn't a racist why did he do that?

On the otherhand what has Gibson done to warrent such hate? Perhaps he is anti-semite, perhaps not.

He has a father who is a anti semite, perhaps he has been fighting his fathers ideology his whole life. Have you ever noticed how much like your parents you really are? That even the bad traits of your parents seem to be ingrained on you and you struggle against them?

Perhaps Gibson is fighting 2 battles. Alcoholism and paternal racism. When he loses the battle with booze he also loses his battle against his fathers racism....

I have no reason to think otherwise... Can you show me where Mel has taken steps against jews?

I don't know about that. It's a high standard that people not drink and drive then get combative with the police and for no reason drop a "F'in Jew" blast.

I don't think he should be shot or anything...but don't act like it's no big deal.

1) People aren't condemning Mel for drunk driving, likewise, no one is defending Mel for drunk driving.

2) No one is really defending Mel for his remarks. We are merely pointing out how bad the rest of you are over-reacting.

Take what a Hollywood producer, and Democratic operative (Jane Hamsher - working on the Lamont campaign currently) did this week. I think it is far more outrageous, and it won't get a quarter the publicity. Plus, she still hasn't apologised for it.
